The History of Lake Oconee

Lake Oconee, located in central Georgia, has a rich and relatively recent history. Created in 1979 by the construction of the Wallace Dam on the Oconee River, the lake was originally developed by Georgia Power for hydroelectric power generation. It spans over 19,000 acres and serves as a vital source of energy, recreation, and wildlife habitat.

Prior to its creation, the area was home to rural communities and farmlands. As the lake was filled, it transformed the region into a popular destination for boating, fishing, and waterside living. Today, Lake Oconee is a sought-after location for both locals and visitors, with luxury resorts, golf courses, and beautiful lakeside homes.

Beyond recreation, the lake has cultural significance, as it supports a thriving community and preserves the natural beauty of Georgia’s landscape.
